Christopher Nolan Blessed the ‘MacGruber’ TV Series Pilot Read-through with the Best E-Mail

slashfilm - p, 2020-05-22 18:30

Christopher Nolan's MacGruber E-mail

Although MacGruber bombed hard at the box office when it was released in theaters back in 2010, the Saturday Night Live film starring Will Forte has become a cult classic. In fact, the movie has cultivated such a following that the new NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock is allowing director Jorma Taccone to make a MacGruber TV series. We’re not sure when we’ll be able to see it, but when the cast got together for the read-through of the pilot, they were blessed with some encouragement and a little bit of pressure from one of the movie’s biggest and most surprising fans: Inception and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan.

First, some context. When Anne Hathaway made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote The Dark Knight Rises, she mentioned being intimidated by Christopher Nolan as a director. However, she soon realized that she could tell he was in a good mood when he started quoting lines from MacGruber. Then, Nolan briefly confirmed his love for the SNL movie in an interview with Business Insider when he was asked the last time he laughed uncontrollably, and he responded:

“I’ve been outed in the past as a MacGruber fan and I have to say there are a couple of moments in that film that had [me] howling uncontrollably.”

In a new oral history about the movie by Vanity Fair, Jorma Taccone recalls finding out about Nolan’s love for MacGruber, which prompted him to introduce himself to Nolan at a Directors Guild of America dinner. Taccone recalled:

“The closer to that story is that my wife [director Marielle Heller] and I were at our first DGA dinner. And she’s like, ‘Christopher Nolan is there. You’ve got to go say hi to him.’ So I went up to him and I said, ‘My name is Jorma. I directed this movie called MacGruber.’ I said, ‘We’re going to do a sequel eventually. What do you think of this: When the director card comes up it just says, ‘Directed by Christopher Nolan’ with an asterisk, and then at the end of the movie there’s another asterisk that says who actually directed it.’ And he said, ‘Let me talk to my wife about it.'”

Man, that’s a great gag. I can only imagine the confusion for more casual moviegoers. But now that the idea for a MacGruber sequel is a TV show instead, it might not work as well. Even so, Christopher Nolan gave his blessing to the MacGruber TV show in another way. Jorma Taccone had invited Christopher Nolan to the pilot read-through, and even though he couldn’t make it, Nolan sent this e-mail back to him:

“Though I can’t be there in person to watch you take the first step of your odyssey—know that my spirit soars with you, and whilst it’s perhaps unfair to add to the great sense of responsibility you must already feel, I am duty bound to tell you—the world is waiting, the world is watching.”

Masterful! Amazing! Nolan makes it sound like Taccone is setting off to write the next great opera. It’s genuinely encouraging while also being perfectly tongue-in-cheek. And it only makes us more giddy with anticipation about seeing the MacGruber TV series come together at Peacock.

New On Blu-ray and Digital: ‘Birds of Prey’, ‘War of the Worlds’, ‘The Mask of Zorro’, ‘Gretel and Hansel’, ‘Tigers Are Not Afraid’

New Blu-ray Releases Birds of Prey

Hello again, friend of a friend. It’s time yet again to take a look at the latest Blu-ray and digital releases to keep you company in these uncertain, strange times. These are the new Blu-ray releases (and digital releases, too) you should check out this week.

Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey was not the box office bomb many made it out to be, but it wasn’t really a hit, either. Which is too bad, because it’s a lot of fun, and fits in nicely with other fun DC films Aquaman and Shazam. The difference here, though, is the hard-R rating. Some have argued that rating hurt the movie – and perhaps it did. There are some excessively brutal moments here, and on occasion, they clash with the goofy tone the film is going for. There are also some structural problems – the first half-hour of the movie keeps jumping back and forth in time to catch us up with stuff, and the film takes wayyyy too long to get the female leads all in the same room together. Once you get beyond that stuff, though, you have yourself a wild and funny flick about Harley Quinn (the very game Margot Robbie) splitting from the Joker and trying to make a name for herself. Then you have Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, someone who works for criminals but wants to do the right thing; Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, a no-nonsense cop who isn’t taken seriously; Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, a pick-pocket Harley takes under her wing; and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, a vigilante who wants revenge. All of these characters run afoul of Black Mask, a mob boss played with over-the-top glee by Ewan McGregor. Director Cathy Yan cranks up the style, creating a visually distinct experience with some killer action scenes. It’s an overall successful film, even if that success wasn’t matched at the box office.

Own or Rent?

This fits nicely into the own category. It looks great on Blu-ray, and it’s a rewatchable flick that many are going to revisit a few years from now and realize they missed the boat. You’ve earned this – get yourself a copy. And then make a delicious breakfast sandwich.

Special Features Include:

  • Birds Eye View Mode
  • Birds of Prey: Birds of a Feather
  • Grime and Crime
  • Wild Nerds
  • Romanesque
  • Sanity is Sooo Last Season
  • A Love/Skate Relationship
  • Gag Reel

War of the Worlds (on 4K)

I have an affinity for the 21st-century films of Mr. Steven Spielberg (have I mentioned I have a podcast about this very topic?), so perhaps I’m biased. But War of the Worlds is one of Spielberg’s best efforts of the 2000s – a bleak, scary blockbuster heavily inspired by 9/11. Sure, you could argue that Spielberg chickens out in the end (I don’t agree), but everything that comes before that final scene is tense and masterfully crafted. Self-absorbed jerk Tom Cruise is watching his estranged kids when aliens invade and start destroying everything in their path. Cruise packs up his kids and hits the road, not so much to save them, but to rather dump them with their mother so he doesn’t have to deal with them. Easier said than done. War of the Worlds is constantly churning along, with Spielberg pummeling us with one jaw-dropping set-piece after another. The entire movie is a reminder of why Spielberg is so acclaimed for what he does.

Own or Rent?

At long last, War of the Worlds has itself a 4K release, which makes this a purchase for sure. Spielberg in 4K? What’s not to love. There are no new special features here – they’re all ported over from the previous Blu-ray release – but that’s okay. You get a fine film beautifully remastered, and that’s enough.

Special Features Include:

  • Revisiting the Invasion
  • The H.G. Wells Legacy
  • Steven Spielberg and the Original ‘War of the Worlds’
  • Characters: The Family Unit
  • Previsualization
  • Production Diaries
  • Designing the Enemy: Tripods and Aliens
  • Scoring ‘War of the Worlds’
  • We Are Not Alone

The Mask of Zorro (on 4K)

Sexy, action-packed, and unafraid to have a great sense of humor, they just don’t make studio blockbusters like The Mask of Zorro these days. Sure, there are blockbusters that have some of those qualities, but name me a recent big studio franchise movie that has all of that – sex appeal, jokes, and awesome action. It just doesn’t happen anymore, and what a damn shame, because this movie is pure joy. The Mask of Zorro starts with the original Zorro, played by Anthony Hopkins, having his wife murdered. He’s then locked away to rot in prison while his mortal enemy (Stuart Wilson) raises his baby daughter as his own. Jump forward a few years and Hopkins busts out of jail and soon takes drunken thief Antonio Banderas under his wing. Banderas, of course, becomes the new Zorro. And he woos Hopkins’ daughter, now all grown up in the form of Catherine Zeta-Jones. From here the film launches into sword fights, horse comedy, and lots of scenes where Banderas and Zeta-Jones have so much sexual chemistry you’ll be pulling on your collar like a cartoon character. It’s hot, folks.

Own or Rent?

The Mask of Zorro feels like it’s experiencing something of a resurgence, and rightfully so. Not only has it caught people’s attention on Netflix, it now has this fancy new 4K Blu-ray release. And when it comes to the “own or rent” question, there’s really no reason to not own this. One of the best modern action-adventure films now on 4K? What are you waiting for?

Special Features Include:

  • Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • Theatrical Trailers
  • Director Commentary
  • “Unmasking Zorro” Documentary
  • Music Video by Marc Anthony and Tina Arena

Gretel and Hansel

Gretel and Hansel got dumped in January, which is usually the dumping ground for movies studios have no faith in (you know, back when movies still opened in theaters). And that’s a damn shame, because this dreamy, occult-laced fairytale retelling from Oz Perkins deserved better. There are some rough edges – there’s a narration that I’m 100% sure Perkins was forced to add by the studio, and at 87 minutes, the narrative feels too short. But Perkins loads the movie with haunting imagery that draws you into his dream-nightmare. Sophia Lillis is excellent as Gretel, with the film very much told from her point of view. Once Gretel and brother Hansel run afoul of the witch, the film subverts expectations by embracing a feminist empowerment spin that, had this film been more wide-seen, would no doubt cause angry man-babies to take to the internet shouting angrily, and record YouTube videos about how their childhoods were ruined.

Own or Rent?

This is a bit of a tough one. I want to say own here, because the movie deserves it. But I was also hoping for an “unrated” Blu-ray release – one that maybe freed-up the studio interference. But I guess that wasn’t in the cards. Oh well. Since this is likely to be the only version of the movie we ever get, I’ll say this should be a purchase.

Special Features Include:

  • Storybook

Tigers Are Not Afraid

Tigers Are Not Afraid should appeal to fans of Guillermo del Toro. It very much has that del Toro “dark, brutal, unflinching fairy tale” style to it – there’s fantasy here, and a world view through a child’s eyes, but there’s also cruelty that you can’t escape from. Directed beautifully by Issa LopezTigers Are Not Afraid follows orphaned children who are granted magic wishes. Sounds fun, right? It’s not. Because there are ghosts, drug cartels, and other hazards waiting around every corner. “I think that if you’re attempting to bring these things to the conversation of the social classes that make the decisions in Mexico — which is [the] middle class and upper class — they don’t want to watch movies about children suffering because of political corruption,” Lopez said. “So what you do is: You make a movie of a genre that makes it easier.”

Own or Rent?

Own this one. Sure, it’s streaming exclusively on Shudder, and if you already subscribe to that horror streaming service (as you should), you might not think this is worth picking up. But physical media will always look better than streaming. Plus you get plenty of special features, including a commentary from director Issa Lopez.

Special Features Include:

  • Interview with Guillermo del Toro and Issa López at Toronto International Film Festival
  • Director’s Commentary
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Casting Sessions
  • Photo Galleries

‘The Alienist’ Season 2 Trailer: The 19th Century Detectives Are Back to Investigate Mysterious Kidnappings

slashfilm - p, 2020-05-22 17:30

the alienist season 2 trailer

Though The Alienist was a minor summer sensation in 2017, the TNT 19th century psychological thriller remains a criminally underrated treat. A 19th century detective drama starring Dakota Fanning, Daniel Bruhl, and Luke EvansThe Alienist followed the unlikely trio as they resolved to find the culprit behind a series of child murders in 19th century New York using early methods of criminal profiling. It was macabre, creepy, and just a touch camp, which was just the right kind of combination for fans of Hannibal and True Detective looking for a new series. But The Alienist was intended as a one-season thing, until TNT renewed it for an unexpected second season that finally comes out this July. Watch The Alienist season 2 trailer below.

The Alienist Season 2 Trailer

The gang is back together for the second season of The Alienist, titled The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, which adapts Caleb Carr’s second novel in his Kreizler series, following the adventures of the titular alienist (played in the series by Daniel Bruhl) — an early term for a psychologist — as he tracks down serial killers in 19th century New York. But the trailer for Angel of Darkness gives more of the spotlight to Dakota Fanning‘s character Sara Howard, the aspiring policewoman who has, since the events of the first season, opened up her own detective agency. It seems that it’s Sara’s investigations into a string of baby kidnappings that gets the gang back together, after suffering tragedy and loss at the end of season 1.

The trailer for The Alienist season 2 brings back everything that made the first season so good: the macabre stylings, the grimy cityscape of turn-of-the-century New York City, the soapy romances between Sara Howard and permanently perplexed newspaper man John Schuyler Moore (Luke Evans). And of course, a horrifying string of child murders, beginning with a mother who is falsely convicted and killed for her baby’s disappearance. I’m only mildly disappointed we don’t get a glimpse of Fanning saying “h-what” with that distinct 19th century pronunciation, but otherwise, this trailer hits all the right spots.

The Alienist season 2 premieres on TNT on July 26, 2020.

The Alienist is an upcoming American drama television series based on the novel of same name by Caleb Carr. The psychological thriller drama is set in 1896, when a series of gruesome murders of boy prostitutes has gripped the city. Newly appointed top cop Teddy Roosevelt calls upon Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a criminal psychologist — aka alienist — and newspaper illustrator John Moore to conduct the investigation in secret. Joining them in the probe is Sara Howard, a headstrong secretary at Police Headquarters.

What Might the Future Look Like? Official Trailer for '2040' Doc Film

Firstshowing.net Movie Trailers - p, 2020-05-22 17:26
2040 Trailer

"Everywhere you look, you will see incredible reasons for hope." Together Films has unveiled an official US trailer for a documentary titled 2040, made by filmmaker Damon Gameau (of the doc That Sugar Film previously). It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year. Motivated by his 4-year-old daughter and concern for the planet she will inherit, Gameau embarks on a global journey to discover what the future of the planet could look like by the year 2040 if we embraced the best solutions already available to us, and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream. Guided by the voices of 100 child interviewees aged 6 to 11 who describe the kind of world they would like to see by the year 2040, Damon draws on the best minds from around the world across climate, economics, technology, civil society, education, agriculture to conjure a positive portrait of what "could be", instead of the dystopian future we are so often presented. This seems like a remarkably fascinating and refreshingly optimistic look at the future and how we can save our planet. ›››

First Trailer for Indie Sex Comedy 'Mope' Set in the Wild World of Porn

Firstshowing.net Movie Trailers - p, 2020-05-22 16:42
Mope Trailer

"You'll do anything I ask?" Quiver has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Mope, which first premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival. It also played at the Cinepocalypse, Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival, and Fantasy Filmfest in Germany last year. Based on a true crime story by Michael Louis Albo, the film is a dark comedy about the multibillion-dollar world of pornography, the term "mope" refers to a low-level, wannabe porn actor. In this tragic true story, Stephen and Herbert, respectively known by their porn alter egos Steve Driver and Tom Dong, were two such mopes—real-life best friends attempting to live the impossible dream. This all looks as crazy and twisted and wacky as it sounds. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Steve and Kelly Sry as Tom, with David Arquette, Max Adler, Tonya Cornelisse, Clayton Rohner, Brian Huskey, and Peggy Dunne. This seems totally ridiculous, but ridiculous in a good way. ›››

New Trailer for Animated 'Marona's Fantastic Tale' About a Stray Dog

Firstshowing.net Movie Trailers - p, 2020-05-22 16:16
Marona's Fantastic Tale Trailer

"I fell in love with my human's scent." GKids has unveiled the new official US trailer for the indie animated film titled Marona's Fantastic Tale, made by Romanian filmmaker Anca Damian (A Very Unsettled Summer, Moon Hotel Kabul) with graphic design by Brecht Evens. This French feature premiered at the Annecy Film Festival last year (here's the first trailer), and is finally getting a virtual release this summer. The film is about a little dog who, at the end of her life, looks back on her life and tells the story of her various owners. She has loved them all unconditionally, but of course life hasn't always been easy. The film is beautiful not only because it's told from the perspective of a dog, but also due to the strange, entrancing, imaginative animation style that mixes techniques to create something unique. Featuring the voice of Lizzie Brocheré as Marona. It's a rather lovely one-of-a-kind film that I'll recommend to intrepid fans of cinema. ›››
