‘The Shining’ TV Series, ‘Justice League Dark’ Coming From Bad Robot & HBO Max

slashfilm - cs, 2020-04-16 23:33

shining tv series

HBO Max just ordered thee new shows from Bad Robot, and one of them is a spin-off of The ShiningOverlook will explore more stories from the haunted hotel featured so prominently in the Stephen King novel and Stanley Kubrick movie. The two other shows are Duster, about a getaway driver for a crime syndicate, and the third is Justice League Dark, set in the world of DC Comics.

Overlook

HBO Max and Bad Robot just announced three new shows, and the most exciting of the bunch – in my humble opinion – is Overlook, a spin-off of The Shining. Here are the details:

Overlook is a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King’s masterpiece The Shining. “Overlook” explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction. The project reunites Bad Robot, King and WBTV, who previously collaborated on the acclaimed psychological-horror series “Castle Rock” for Hulu.

There’s plenty of potential here, and it’s not the first time someone attempted to tell more tales of the Overlook Hotel. At one point, Mark Romanek was set to direct a prequel called The Overlook Hotel, with a script by Glen Mazzara. That now-aborted film was an origin story of sorts, revealing the construction of the hotel and all the terrible things that followed. This seems unconnected to that, though. I’m a big Stephen King fan, so I’m very curious about this, and really hope it doesn’t turn out to be a disappointment and end up suffering from the Bad Robot mystery box.

Justice League Dark

Another series in the works is simply described as “a major series based on DC characters in the Justice League Dark Universe.” There are no other details, but Justice League Dark is the more supernatural-inclined DC superhero team, consisting of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, and Zatanna.

At one point, Guillermo del Toro was trying to make a Justice League Dark movie, but it never came to pass. It’s hard to gauge just what this show will be at the moment, but HBO says more details will be coming soon.

Duster

The final show is Duster, which will be co-written by J.J. Abrams & LaToya Morgan. The series will be “set in the 1970’s Southwest” and focus on “the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful.” Of all the shows, this one is the least exciting to me, but that could change the second I see some footage. It’s still too early to tell.

“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie [McGrath],” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer of HBO Max and President, TNT, TBS, & truTV“What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

‘E.T.’ Cinematographer Allen Daviau Dead at 77 From Coronavirus Complications

slashfilm - cs, 2020-04-16 23:30

Allen Daviau obit

Allen Daviau, a cinematographer whose work includes E.T.Empire of the Sun, Bugsy, and more, has died at the age of 77 due to complications from the coronavirus. Daviau had a long-standing relationship with Steven Spielberg, having worked with the director on his short films, including 1968’s Amblin’. He would go on to shoot four feature films for Spielberg.

He may not be as big a household name as some cinematographers, but Allen Daviau left his mark. Daviau met Steven Spielberg in 1967, and would eventually shoot several feature films for the filmmaker: E.T.Twilight Zone: The MovieThe Color Purple, and Empire of the Sun. Daviau’s other credits include Harry and the HendersonsBusyFearlessThe Falcon and the SnowmanDefending Your LifeCongo, and more. His final credit was on Van Helsing.

Empire of the Sun

Kees van Oostrum, president of the American Society of Cinematographers, released this statement about Daviau’s death:

“It is with great regret and sadness that I have to announce the passing last night of my friend and a great member of the society, Mr. Allen Daviau, ASC. Allen started his career shooting the early movies of Stephen Spielberg, including Amblin (1968), and went on to an impressive career as a cinematographer with movies that have deeply inspired us all. He was honored with 5 Academy Award nominations, was bestowed our Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 and won our Outstanding  ASC Achievement in Cinematography for Bugsy (1991) and Empire of the Sun (1987). He amassed an impressive body of work: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), The Color Purple (1985), and Avalon (1990), just to mention a few.

Allen was active in our society in many ways like chairing our membership committee for several years. Also, his commitment to teaching our craft and being very accessible for young cinematographers will forever be engraved in our memories. He will be remembered fondly for his sense of humor, his taste for the best of foods and his laugh that unmistakably marked his presence from far away.”

E.T.

When asked how he got into cinematography, Daviau replied:

“When I was 12 years old, I saw color television for the first time. It was a brand new thing and I said I have to find out how that works. It led me into a whole series of studies—reading, going to the library and then gate crashing at television studios and then movie studios. The more I learned, the more I realized I had to learn more about photography. The more I learned about photography, the more fascinated I was with the cinematographer, the director of photography and what that job was. I figured, by the time I was 16 years old, that it was the best job in the world. I never stopped thinking that, and it’s been one of those things that has been a delight to accomplish.”

‘Valley Girl’ Trailer: The ’80s Teen Comedy Becomes a Jukebox Musical

slashfilm - cs, 2020-04-16 23:00

valley girl trailer

Hey kids, do you remember Valley Girl? It was a teen rom-com from 1983, starring Deborah Foreman as a rich girl from the Valley, and Nicolas Cage as the punk from Hollywood she falls in love with. It was a big hit on its meager budget, and even scored positive reviews – although I’m not sure how much of a “classic” it’s regarded as these days. In any case, someone went ahead and remade it, and turned it into a jukebox musical, to boot. Best of all, the new Valley Girl has Jessica Rothe, the fantastic lead of the Happy Death Day films, as the titular Valley girl. Check out the trailer below.

Valley Girl Trailer

Well, this looks like completely harmless fun. Bright colors, familiar tunes, Alica Silverstone cameos – it’s got it all. It also has Jessica Rothe, a great actress who should really be in more movies. In Valley Girl, Rothe’s Julie “is the ultimate ’80s Valley Girl. A creative free spirit; Julie’s time is spent with her best friends shopping at the Galleria mall and making plans for senior prom. That is, until she falls hard for Randy (Joshua Whitehouse), a Sunset Strip punk rocker, who challenges everything the Valley and Julie stand for. Despite push-back from friends and family, Julie must break out of the safety of her world to follow her heart and discover what it really means to be a Valley Girl.”

For reference, here’s the original, song-free Valley Girl.

I’m sure this Joshua Whitehouse fellow is fine, but let’s be honest: he’s no Nic Cage with weird red hair. In addition to Rothe and Whitehouse, the new Valley Girl stars Jessie Ennis, Ashleigh Murray, Chloe Bennet, Logan Paul, Mae Whitman, Mario Revolori, Rob Huebel, Judy Greer, Alicia Silverstone, and Camila Morrone.

The ’80s soundtrack for this jukebox musical was produced by Harvey Mason, Jr., with Mandy Moore choreographing the dance numbers. Rachel Lee Goldenberg directs a script from Amy Talkington. Valley Girl will be available on digital May 8.

Netflix is Now Worth More Than Disney, and It Only Took a Global Pandemic

slashfilm - cs, 2020-04-16 22:30

Netflix worth

It took a pandemic for Disney to be dethroned as the biggest entertainment company on the planet. With theme parks shuttered, theatrical releases delayed, and movie productions shut down across the world due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the House of Mouse has been seeing a drop in stocks — despite the successful rollout of the streaming platform Disney+.

With everyone quarantined inside, it’s natural that streaming would be on the rise. But with Disney+ still in its early days, it’s easy to see which company would rise to the top amid the pandemic: the streaming giant itself, Netflix. And as of end of trading last night, Netflix has officially overtaken Disney in total net worth.

Variety reports that Netflix’s shares have overtaken Disney, putting the streamer’s total net worth — at a stock price of $426.75 per share which gives it a current market capitalization of $187.3 billion, over the House of Mouse’s $186.6 billion. Netflix’s stocks hit an all-time high Wednesday, with investors expecting the streamer to do well during the coronavirus crisis, while Disney’s stock dropped down 2.5% amid a broader market decline Wednesday.

How did Netflix, a tech company that only entered the Hollywood production market less than a decade ago, overtake a 100-year global multimedia conglomerate like Disney? According to analysts, it has to do with the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has thrown the economy into chaos, as businesses have shuttered and self-isolation has become the general practice. But one thing that has thrived? Streaming services.

Netflix was the first streaming service to disrupt the Hollywood studio system, and it seems like it could disrupt the entertainment industry at large as the pandemic wears on and experts remain uncertain if the world will return to as it was before coronavirus. And while Disney finally entered the streaming wars with the launch of Disney+ in November 2019, the company relies on all sorts of revenue streams, including theme parks, merchandising, and of course, movies, all of which have been put on hold during the coronavirus lockdown. Netflix was the company to pioneer streaming with original and library titles on its service, and thus maintains its status as the giant among streaming platforms.

Streaming has exploded during quarantine, with U.S. viewing of internet video on televisions up 109% in March 2020 compared with the comparable four-week period in 2019, according to Nielsen data, Variety reports. Netflix is scheduled to report its first quarter 2020 earnings on April 21 after market close. Experts expect that the previously forecast total paid net of 7.0 million worldwide will be even greater.

Other streaming platforms have seen an uptick since the global lockdown began. Disney’s own Disney+, which launched in November 2019, surpassed a whopping 50 million customers worldwide, while Amazon’s shares hit an all-time high Tuesday before setting a new record Wednesday.

Quibi Snapchat Series No Longer Happening

slashfilm - cs, 2020-04-16 22:00

Quibi Snapchat Series

Quibi has already lost one of its planned shows. The streaming service devoted to short-form content was set to create a Social Network-style series inspired by the creation of Snapchat. Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg announced the show at last year’s SXSW. No official reason has been given for the decision to pull the plug, but it might have something to do with Quibi not having the smoothest of launches.

Variety has the scoop about the Quibi Snapchat series getting the ax. The show was to be an adaptation of the script Frat Boy Genius by Elissa Karasik, which was on the 2018 Black List. Here’s the logline:

A disgruntled employee of Snapchat tells the rise of her former Stanford classmate, preeminent douchebag and current boss Evan Spiegel.

That sounds very much like The Social Network, and a review of the script goes into more detail, which also sounds very Social Network-y:

Evan Spiegel, as our title implies, is a frat boy. He is not, however, a genius. At least according to our story’s narrator, Lily, who uses the majority of her voice-overing to paint Evan as an entitled douchebag idiot. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. One day in college Evan hears a student discussing accidentally sending an embarrassing photo to his mom, which gives him the idea for Snapchat (then titled Picaboo). Snapchat deletes photos several seconds after they’re sent.

Evan teams up with his two best pals, Bobby (who handles coding), and Reggie (who handles day to day operations) and moves to California where they desperately try and get their app off the ground, all while Lily offers her unfiltered thoughts on how dumb Evan is. Eventually, Evan realizes he should be targeting high school kids, and that’s when his app blows up. One of those kids ends up being the daughter of Michael Lynton, then CEO of Sony Entertainment. Michael gives Evan the money to take Snapchat into the stratosphere, and that’s exactly where it goes. The app is worth 13 billion dollars within a couple of years.

And indeed, when Jeffrey Katzenberg first announced the project last year, he, too, talked about The Social Network, saying: “We want to tell a story that’s as compelling and interesting about Snapchat and Evan as The Social Network was for Facebook.”

So what, exactly, happened? Why isn’t Quibi moving forward with this? Variety doesn’t have an answer, but perhaps it has something to do with the underwhelming launch of the streaming service. Quibi made its big debut last week, and resulted in 1.7 million downloads, which isn’t terrible, all things considered. But it’s not exactly a huge hit, either. Part of the problem has to do with timing – Quibi was designed to be an on-the-go service, but no one is on-the-go right now. Overall, though, people just didn’t seem too excited about Quibi. Perhaps that’ll change soon, as the service is fast-tracking plans to make Quibi available on TVs (it’s mobile-only at the moment).

As for Frat Boy Genius, maybe it’ll end up somewhere else. People definitely seem to like the script, so it’s bound to attract some attention elsewhere.

Jason Momoa Compares His ‘Dune’ Character to Han Solo

slashfilm - cs, 2020-04-16 21:30

jason momoa dune

Every space opera needs a handsome rogue to try to do their best Harrison Ford impression. Many try and fail, but Aquaman star Jason Momoa could just pull it off with his swashbuckling swordmaster Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming sci-fi epic Dune. Momoa is playing the master swordsman who trains Timothée Chalamet‘s protagonist in Villeneuve’s highly anticipated adaptation of the classic Frank Herbert sci-fi novel. He’s a supporting character in the novel, but in the upcoming film, Momoa teases that he will have a greater part and even be rogueish scene-stealer similar to Han Solo in the Star Wars movies.

Momoa’s first image out of Dune is already very tantalizing: long-haired with a billowing white shirt fit for a romance novel cover, his Duncan Idaho made a good impression amid the rest of the ridiculously good-looking cast. And the actor appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show to talk up his mysterious swordsman, who trains Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the noble heir to House Atreides. Unlike the romance hero vision that he appears to be in the image, Momoa teased that Duncan Idaho is actually a “rogue warrior” similar to the most iconic space scoundrel in cinema, Star Wars‘ Han Solo.

“I get to play this character Duncan Idaho, who’s kind of a master swordsman who’s made the right hand man to Duke Leto who is Oscar Isaac. He’s the first person to be sent out to land on Dune and that’s when I meet the character that Javier Bardem plays. I can’t believe I had a scene with Javier Bardem! It’s a pretty massive film and I get to be this little—he’s kind of the Han Solo-esque of the group. He’s this rogue warrior who protects Timothée Chalamet and serves Oscar Isaac.”

That’s high praise for any character, as Harrison Ford’s Han Solo has been oft-imitated, never replicated. And it’s a slightly confusing description of Duncan Idaho, who in the Frank Herbert novel, was sort of a non-entity. But to dive deeper, we need to talk details.

Spoilers ahead for the Dune novel, and presumably the film.

Introduced as Paul’s stern swordmaster, Duncan certainly could swashbuckle with the best of them. Duncan would become Duke Leto’s (played by Oscar Isaac in the film) ambassador to the Fremen in hopes of building allies against the coming war with the Harkonnens — which would lead Momoa to share many scenes with Javier Bardem’s Stilgar, the leader of the Fremen group — but he would meet an early doom. To be honest, before his story arc in Dune came to an end, I would often confuse him for Gurney Halleck, the equally stern weapons master for Paul. But Momoa’s hints about his role in the movie suggests an expanded role for Duncan Idaho, and maybe some personality to go along with it.

In the books, Duncan would prove so popular among Dune readers that Herbert would actually bring him back as a ghola, a clone that struggles to recollect the memories of their past lives. This future storyline is likely how Villeneuve got such a big star to play a supporting role: a chance for Momoa to sink his teeth into a meaty role that isn’t just an extension of his surf bro persona. Of course, there’s no guarantee (or even a big chance) that Dune will become a mega-movie franchise to explore that story, so for now at least we’ll get Momoa being his best rogueish self.

Photographer Sues NBCUniversal Demanding Millions For Copyright Infringement

Torrentfreak - cs, 2020-04-16 21:02

When reviewing the many lawsuits filed against pirate site operators over the years, it’s not unusual to see damages claims running into the tens of millions of dollars. This is largely due to the scale of the alleged infringement and the number of copyrighted works involved.

In recent years many photographers have also sought to enforce their rights, sometimes filing lawsuits for a single image or video, such as in the recent case against Kendall Jenner. However, a case just filed against Comcast-owned NBCUniversal could run to pirate site-levels of damages.

Filed in a New York district court this week by Mark Seliger, the complaint (and subsequent amended complaint) alleges that NBCUniversal Media-owned gossip portal Eonline.com (E!) reproduced the photographer’s famous portraits without permission.

“Seliger is an accomplished and critically acclaimed photographer. His works have appeared in Rolling Stone, GQ, Vogue, and Vanity Fair and he has authored numerous album covers, books, and short films,” the complaint begins.

“He has also created photography in collaboration with global brands like Netflix, Levi’s, and Ralph Lauren. He has won numerous awards, including the Clio Grand Prix and the Cannes Lions Grand Prix, and his works are part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the National Portrait Gallery in London.”

Presenting dozens of iconic celebrity portraits owned by the photographer, the complaint lists page after page of URLs on Eonline.com which allegedly carry these copyrighted works, including those depicting Miley Cyrus, Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Nicky Minaj, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Lopez, Alec Baldwin, Jamie Dornan, Amy Schumer, Bradley Cooper, Katie Holmes, to name just a few.

“Defendants, and each of them, have willfully copied, reproduced, displayed, and distributed the Subject Photography for financial benefit and without Plaintiff’s consent, at and on websites bearing the URLs depicted in Exhibit B hereto,” the complaint notes, adding: “Plaintiff did not consent to said use of the Subject Photography.”

Seliger alleges that the NBCUniversal-owned publication (plus Does 1-10) accessed the copyrighted works from locations such as his website and social media, copied and then reproduced them at the dozens of Eonline.com URLs listed in the complaint. There are many, which means that this lawsuit has the potential, at least on paper, to become extremely expensive for NBCUniversal should the court rule in the photographer’s favor.

Alleging “willful, intentional and malicious” direct copyright infringement, Seliger demands statutory damages of up to $150,000 per infringement. A second claim for relief, alleging vicarious and/or contributory copyright infringement, demands the same amount per individual breach of US copyright law.

A third claim states that Seliger’s works are “routinely published with attribution, credit, and other copyright management information” which identify him as the creator. According to the lawsuit, the defendants removed this information and/or added false information before distributing online the photographs online. Citing violations of 17 U.S.C. § 1202(a), the photographer demands unspecified additional damages.

As per the standard in these cases, Seliger further demands an injunction preventing the defendants from continuing to infringe his rights plus costs, attorneys’ fees, and a trial by jury.

Disney’s Cassian Andor ‘Star Wars’ Series Adds Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller

slashfilm - cs, 2020-04-16 21:00

Rogue One - K-2SO, Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso

Stellan Skarsgard is already playing the villain in one space opera — why not add another? The star of Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune adaptation is set to join the cast of the Disney+ Rogue One spin-off series centered around Diego Luna‘s Rebel agent Cassian Andor. Skarsgard is in talks to join the Cassian Andor series cast alongside Poldark‘s Kyle Soller.

Variety broke the news that Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller (Anna Karenina, The Titan) are set to star opposite Diego Luna in the Disney+ Cassian Andor series. Both are in final negotiations for their roles in the yet-untitled Star Wars spin-off series. There’s no information yet on who either of them are playing.

But considering Skarsgard’s penchant for playing cold, intimidating villains, and the Star Wars franchise’s tendency to cast accented European character actors as villains, it’s likely that the Swedish actor will play an agent of the Empire. The series takes place before the events of Rogue One in the early days of the Rebellion against the Empire, and follows Cassian Andor’s adventures during those formative years of the Rebellion.

But this casting could yet surprise us — the German film director Werner Herzog played a mysterious “Client” who hires Pedro Pascal’s bounty hunter in The Mandalorian, while legendary Swedish-French actor Max von Sydow played a wizened ally of the Resistance in The Force Awakens. Perhaps Skarsgard could buck expectations and play a good guy who crosses paths with Luna’s Cassian Andor.

The series, which is described as a “spy thriller,” will feature the return of Luna as Cassian Andor, along with Rogue One‘s Alan Tudyk who reprises his role as the snarky droid sidekick K-2SO. Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote Rogue One, is set to write the pilot of the series and direct multiple episodes. Stephen Schiff is set to serve as showrunner.

The Cassian Andor series was originally supposed to started shooting last year, but it’s unclear if the industry-wide shutdown due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic will alter plans. Disney has previously indicated the show will debut on Disney+ sometime in 2021.
